Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is a fascinating city, more isolated from other major cities than any other in Australia. Many wonder if it’s worth the journey, but for me, the answer is a resounding YES! Visiting Perth had long been a dream of mine, and the city truly lived up to my expectations. Perth stands out from other Australian cities – it almost feels like stepping back 20 years in time. The streets are calmer, and you don’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle typical of big cities, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.
Despite its laid-back vibe, Perth is far from boring – there are frequent events and festivals, and the sun almost always shines, making it a fantastic destination year-round! Perth offers everything from cultural experiences to amazing beaches, and there’s certainly something for everyone. Below, I’ve gathered my top tips on what you absolutely shouldn’t miss in Perth!
1. Go for a stroll at Kings Park in Perth Australia
Kings Park in Perth is one of the most spectacular parks I have visited, and it’s actually the largest city park in the world. It’s even larger than Central Park in New York! The park features a large and beautiful botanical garden, vast green fields, and plenty of historical cultural memorials in statues and other monuments. The main attraction in my opinion is the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, a cool bridge at treetop height offering a lovely view over the Swan River. Beyond the bridge, there is, of course, much more to see and do—just standing and enjoying the view of Perth City is wonderful.
2. Visit Perths fantastic beaches
As the sunniest city in Australia, Perth enjoys countless hours of sunshine year-round. It can get quite hot here, so what better way to cool off than by visiting some of Perth’s stunning beaches? I’ve highlighted my top 3 favorites, but there are many more beautiful spots waiting to be explored.
Cottesloe Beach
One of the more famous beaches in Western Australia, and for a good reason! It takes only 20 minutes from Perth City by public transport to Cottesloe. The beach is known for its great surfing waves and crystal-clear water. There are also plenty of restaurants and pubs around, making it a great place to hang out!
Scarborough Beach
Scarborough Beach is also an iconic beach in Western Australia that is almost a must-visit. A large beach with plenty of space for everyone! Here, too, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants within walking distance.
City Beach
A fantastic beach for those who love to surf! There are reliable waves year-round, so you will be never disappointed by visiting City Beach.
3. Take a Selfie with a Quokka on Rottnest Island
A visit to Perth isn’t complete without a trip to Rottnest Island! Hop on a ferry and spend the day cycling around this picturesque paradise. Be sure to snap plenty of selfies with the friendly quokkas, and don’t miss out on the island’s stunning beaches, considered some of the most beautiful in Australia. This is a must-do experience you won’t want to miss!
4. Explore Fremantle
Take a trip to Fremantle, a vibrant port city known for its lively atmosphere, historic architecture, and bustling markets. Stroll through the charming streets, visit the famous Fremantle Markets, or relax at one of the cozy cafes. Don’t miss the historic Fremantle Prison and make sure to stop by Little Creatures Brewery, a local favorite where you can enjoy freshly brewed beer with stunning views of the waterfront. It’s the perfect spot for a day trip from Perth!
5. Stroll Around the New Elizabeth Quay in Perth Australia
Take some time to stroll around and enjoy the newly built New Elizabeth Quay in Perth. There are plenty of lovely restaurants and sculptures to enjoy. It’s a place that is very popular among both tourists and locals as it is right by the waterfront and offers several activities. There are also several things to do that are free for those on a budget.
6. Watertown Outlet Shopping
Like any major city, Perth offers a fantastic shopping experience with plenty of options to explore. You’ll find several great shopping centers just by strolling through the streets. One spot we particularly loved is Watertown Outlet, a must-visit for any shopping enthusiast. The outlet has a wide range of stores and fantastic deals, making it the perfect place to hunt for bargains. If you love shopping, don’t miss a trip to Watertown — there’s something here for everyone!
7. Best dumplings in Perth - My house dumpling
Our visit to My House Dumpling was unforgettable — the food was simply amazing! As a dumpling lover, I can confidently say these were some of the best I’ve ever had. The restaurant itself is small and unassuming, but the exceptional service makes it stand out. We were warmly welcomed by an elderly gentleman (likely the owner) who had a big smile on his face throughout our meal and made sure we were completely satisfied. And we were! The dumplings were incredibly tasty, and I highly recommend this spot to anyone who loves Asian cuisine.
Have a wonderful trip to Perth!
