Best Time for Perth to Exmouth Road Trip
The best time to drive from Perth to Exmouth is between April – October. The temperatures will be warm, even during the Western Australia winter, with calmer winds than the gusty summer months.
In particular, the school holiday period over July will be the busiest time of the year in Coral Bay and Exmouth – advance bookings are required. At other times during the year during this period, bookings are still highly recommended.
Around August, the wildflowers will be blooming in the region. Whale Sharks will be migrating in the area, with whale shark swims from April to July.
Renting a car
This guide is based on my journey driving from Perth to Exmouth by car. Another popular choice is to embark on this Perth to Exmouth journey in a campervan. The itinerary outlined below is equally suitable for a Perth to Exmouth campervan adventure.
The leading campervan rental companies in Western Australia that I recommend are:
Apollo Britz Camplify. One of the most common rentalcars in Australia.
I also want to mention that a 4WD vehicle isn’t necessary for this self-drive itinerary, having one will grant you access to additional locations, including beach driving. However, if you decide to rent a 4WD, be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions, as some companies have restrictions on off-road usage.
For car rentals in Perth, I suggest Discover Cars – they’re one of the largest car rental aggregators. I’ve often found their rates to be more budget-friendly than booking directly, and they offer free cancellation, providing you with added flexibility if plans change.
Check out prices for car rentals in Perth (offering the widest range of suppliers and best prices) at DiscoverCars.com.
It’s generally easier and more economical to rent a car and begin your road trip from Perth. Rentals in Exmouth can be quite limited.
Camping
If you’re planning on camping in Western Australia, keep in mind that free camping options are limited. Roadside overnight stops are available. But for more facilities, you’ll need to book at caravan parks or WA Parks-run bush camps. While these bush camps offer fewer amenities like showers and power, they’re budget-friendly, typically costing around $11 per adult per night.
To easily find both free and paid campsites, consider downloading the WikiCamps app, which is well worth the small one-time fee. It’s important to note that there’s no free camping available in Exmouth.
How much time do you need?
Embarking on the Perth to Exmouth road trip offers an incredible 12-day adventure, though it can be condensed to 7 days if needed.
If time is limited, flying to Exmouth and hiring a car there or hiring a car in Perth and flying back from Exmouth could be more convenient options. However, keep in mind that opting for this route might incur a one-way hire fee for your rental car, and flights between Perth and Exmouth can be costly.
