Vietnam

Whether you’re drawn to ancient temples, bustling markets, or the city’s incredible culinary culture, Hanoi has something to offer every traveler.

This city is a place where you can feel the pulse of Vietnam’s history while enjoying the dynamic modern lifestyle. If you’ve decided to visit Hanoi, you’re in luck! This guide will give you a list of the 12 best things to do in Hanoi, guaranteed to create memories for a lifetime.

Explore Hanoi Old Quarter

The Old Quarter is the very heart of Hanoi, where traditional Vietnamese culture meets modern city life. Narrow streets are lined with charming shops, cozy cafes, and historic homes that preserve a slice of the city’s history.

This is where you’ll find authentic Vietnamese street food, from the famous Pho soup to grilled chicken skewers. Stop by a local shop to purchase traditional crafts or artwork created by skilled artisans. In the Old Quarter, you’ll feel the city’s vibrant energy and traditional warmth—a place where past and present converge.

Hoan Kiem Lake – The Heart of Hanoi

Hoan Kiem Lake is one of Hanoi’s most iconic landmarks, offering a peaceful retreat in the midst of the bustling city.

Visit the Ngoc Son Temple, a beautiful structure on a small island in the lake, and learn about the fascinating legend of the sacred turtle. Many visitors start their day with a stroll around the lake or join locals for early morning Tai Chi, a meditative way to begin the day. In the evening, the lake becomes even more enchanting, as lights reflect on the water, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – A Must-See in Hanoi

No visit to Hanoi is complete without a stop at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, one of the city’s most revered and historic sites. Pay your respects to Vietnam’s most prominent leader and learn about his vital role in the country’s history.

When visiting the mausoleum, be sure to follow strict rules of respect, including dress codes and behavior, as it is a sacred site for many Vietnamese people. Don’t miss the Presidential Palace and Ho Chi Minh’s former stilt house nearby, offering further insights into his life and leadership.

Discover the Temple of Literature in Hanoi

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu) is one of Hanoi’s most impressive cultural and historical landmarks. Originally built in the 11th century, it served as Vietnam’s first university and is a tribute to learning, wisdom, and Confucius.

Admire the stunning architecture, wander through the tranquil gardens, and reflect on the historical significance of education in Vietnam. For many Vietnamese, the temple symbolizes the nation’s commitment to education and intellectual growth. It’s a place of serenity and reverence, offering a break from the city’s hectic pace.

Visit Dong Xuan Market – Hanoi’s Largest Market

To get a true feel for Hanoi’s local culture, a visit to the Dong Xuan Market is a must. Here, you’ll find a wide range of goods, from fresh produce and clothing to souvenirs and traditional Vietnamese handicrafts.

The market is lively, colorful, and full of activity. You can spend hours exploring the various stalls and sampling local delicacies. Don’t miss trying Bun Cha (grilled pork) or Banh Cuon (steamed rice rolls with meat and mushrooms).

West Lake – Hanoi’s Largest Lake

West Lake is the largest lake in Hanoi and a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The area features numerous cafes and restaurants with stunning views of the water, making it the perfect place to relax.

Rent a bike and take a ride around the lake, passing beautiful parks, temples, and pagodas. Be sure to visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of Hanoi’s oldest pagodas, located on a small island in the lake. It’s a significant religious and historical site.

Explore Hanoi’s Food Scene

Hanoi’s culinary culture is one of the most fascinating in Vietnam, known for its delicious street food. Don’t miss Pho, the famous Vietnamese noodle soup. Other must-try dishes include Bun Cha (grilled pork with rice noodles) and Egg Coffee, a sweet and creamy Hanoi specialty.

Take a Bike Ride Through Hanoi’s Countryside

A bike ride through Hanoi’s countryside offers a chance to experience a different side of the city and Vietnam’s natural beauty. Explore lush rice fields, picturesque villages, and the peaceful atmosphere just a short distance from Hanoi’s busy streets.

See a Water Puppet Show – Unique to Hanoi

A water puppet show is one of Hanoi’s most unique cultural experiences. This ancient art form, over 1,000 years old, tells stories from Vietnamese folklore and traditions.

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is a popular venue for these performances, where puppets “dance” on water accompanied by traditional music, creating a magical experience for all ages.

Experience Hanoi Nightlife on Ta Hien Street

When the sun sets, Ta Hien Street becomes one of Hanoi’s liveliest spots. Known for its bars, restaurants, and cafes, this street offers a relaxed atmosphere where you can try Vietnamese beer, Bia Hoi, at a local pub.

It’s a great place to meet new people—locals and international travelers alike—and experience the city’s nightlife vibe. Whether you prefer a quiet evening or a lively night with music and laughter, Ta Hien Street has something for everyone.

Visit Hoa Lo Prison – Hanoi’s History Up Close

For those interested in Hanoi’s history, a visit to Hoa Lo Prison (known as the “Hanoi Hilton”) is essential. Learn about the prison’s use during French colonial rule and the Vietnam War, including its history as a holding site for American prisoners of war.

Visiting Hoa Lo offers insight into the country’s darker past and how Hanoi has evolved over time. It’s both an emotional and educational experience. Read more about Hoa Lo prison here.

Enjoy Coffee on Hanoi Train Street

End your trip with a cup of coffee in an extraordinary setting—on an active train track! As unusual as it sounds, this was one of our favorite experiences in Hanoi. Vietnamese coffee is among the best, and enjoying it on Train Street is unforgettable.

When a train approaches, locals quickly clear tables and chairs from the tracks. You’ll feel the ground vibrate as the train speeds by. It’s an exhilarating experience and a great photo opportunity.

Visit Train Street at 224 Le Duan Kham Thien, Dong Da, to experience it yourself.
