Grampians National Park worth visiting? We didn’t even know that Grampians National Park existed when we first visited Australia. To be completely honest, we didn’t know much about Australia at all and hadn’t planned anything beyond visiting Melbourne and Sydney. After a few days in Melbourne, we received a tip to visit Grampians National Park. Since we had no other plans, we took a car and drove there. (We were fortunate enough to borrow a car from acquaintances, but it’s very easy to rent a car if needed.) We do not regret this decision! Grampians turned out to be one of the best experiences we had in Australia.
The best, in my opinion, was all the kangaroos there. If you haven’t been in Australia for a long time and maybe never even seen wild kangaroos, it’s worth going there just for that reason. There are kangaroos everywhere, and they are used to people, allowing you to see them up close. Here, you can see wild kangaroos on a playground in the village of Halls Gap. They come there in the afternoon; don’t miss it!
How do you get there? Where do you sleep? How many days do you need?
We drove our own car, and it takes about 3 hours from Melbourne. If you want to drive there and stay at a hotel/motel or camp, it’s easy, and it’s also relatively cheap to rent a car in Australia. You can also rent a campervan and stay in it for a few nights at the campsite. We chose to stay a bit cheaper outside the village in the National Park, but if I were to go to Grampians again, I would choose to stay at “The Grampians Motel.” The accommodation looked magical at night (and during the day) when there were thousands of kangaroos hopping around the motel. Moreover, you lived in the park and avoided driving in and out every day. You can find information about the accommodation here. In addition to that accommodation, there are some others; just Google, and you will surely find something in your price range.
Since it doesn’t take too long to drive there from Melbourne, you can see and do a lot in three days, i.e., two nights. Two nights are quite enough. But as with everything else, depending on how much time you have, you can definitely stay longer. I wouldn’t recommend staying less than two nights as there is so much to do that your time there can easily become stressful if you only have one night.
What is there to do?
There are many different lookouts and hikes in Grampians. Even their little village Halls Gap is cozy, and there is a super good ice cream/milkshake shop that you must try. To ensure you don’t miss the best things or places, I’ll make a list below that you can use.
- The Pinnacle hike
- The Balconies (red lookout)
- Boroka Lookout
- Halls Gap Zoo
- Venus Baths
- All the animals, kangaroos, and wild parrots
- Halls Gap’s cozy little village with nice eateries
Is Halls Gap Zoo in Grampians national park worth visiting?
I am very pleasantly surprised when it comes to their zoo. The animals have very large enclosures, and many of the animals roam freely. It’s a relatively small park, and you don’t really get the feeling of a zoo but more like a regular park with animals; it’s very cozy. You can feed wallabies (small kangaroos) and even deer that roam freely in the park. If you have time and feel willing to spend a little more money on such a thing, it’s definitely worth a visit. They have some different animals, and as I said, you can really see that they take very good care of the animals. Read more about Halls Gap Zoo here.
I hope you’ve got an insight into what Grampians National Park has to offer, and I hope I’ve inspired you to go there. It’s an amazing experience, and you won’t regret it!
