Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city and undoubtedly one of the places you’ve heard a lot about from Australia, as many people love the city. Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria. According to me, it is the most cultural city in Australia. If you like art, music, and food, I can confidently say that you would enjoy Melbourne. Usually, it’s like this: either you’re a person who likes Melbourne or a person who likes Sydney. They are the two largest cities, but they are very different from each other. Here is all you need to know about Melbourne
How is the weather in Melbourne?
The weather in Melbourne varies a lot because it is located in the southern part of Australia. It can be very hot in summer but also very cold in their winter, which is during our summer.
What is it like to live in Melbourne?
If you’re on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) in Australia, it’s extremely popular to live in Melbourne to work at one of the many cafes or restaurants there. My personal opinion about Melbourne is that it was nice to visit, but I wouldn’t have enjoyed living there. I didn’t get that “holiday feeling” or the Australian feeling that I experienced in many other places in Australia. I imagined my time in Australia to be a bit of a beach life, and if you want that, Melbourne isn’t the best place. If you’re, as mentioned before, a cultural person who likes big cities, you would probably thrive there.
Top 5 things to see and do in Melbourne – Australia’s second-largest city! All you need to know
- Brighton Beach: Visit Brighton Beach to see all the beautiful and colorful little cottages on the beach. This is a bit of an icon for Melbourne and should not be missed. The beach becomes very unique because of the cottages. Try to find the cottage that represents Sweden!
- Visit the wild penguins at St Kilda Pier: In the evenings, you can go down to the bridge in St Kilda to see when the penguins come to sleep under the bridge. This is free. On-site, there are volunteers to ensure that nothing happens to the penguins and to check that they are healthy and happy. A very cozy experience! Check online for the times they usually show up: Penguins in St Kilda
- Visit South Melbourne Market: In Melbourne, there are many markets where you can go shopping. South Melbourne Market was the best and has really everything. You got a bit of an Asian vibe because the market was so big. You can, among other things, shop for local food, delicacies, clothes, and souvenirs.
- Stroll around in Graffiti Lanes: There are many streets filled with graffiti-painted walls in Melbourne, and it’s so cool! These streets are a must when you visit Melbourne:
- Hosier Lane
- ACDC Lane
- Duckboard Place
- Union Lane
- Tattersalls Lane
- Experience Pentridge Prison: This experience was so cool. You can enter an old prison to see how they lived there before. There are also some tours you can do with guides who tell true stories from the prison. This was something we were recommended that I didn’t know existed but turned out to be one of the best things we did in Melbourne. Very affordable too.
Other things to do around Melbourne that you need to know
If you are traveling in Australia for a shorter period and visiting Melbourne, there are also many things to do outside Melbourne. When you visit Victoria, I highly recommend that you also do Great Ocean Road and Grampians National Park at the same time. These two places, along with Melbourne, are the best in Victoria in my opinion.
Have a fantastic time in Australia’s second-largest city – Melbourne!
