Milos, Greece – Guide to Beaches, Excursions, and Local Food

Pollonia Milos

Milos is a true gem in the Greek archipelago, offering a perfect blend of charm, natural beauty, and cultural richness. This volcanic island is known for its dramatic coastlines, white rock formations, and crystal-clear beaches – it’s easy to see why Milos has quickly become a favorite destination. With everything from hidden beaches and mysterious caves to picturesque fishing villages and historic ruins, the island is an ideal choice for nature lovers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking complete relaxation. In this blog post, I’ll share my top tips on what you absolutely shouldn’t miss during your visit to Milos – from attractions and excursions to the best beaches and restaurants for a true taste of Greece.

Attractions in Milos You Must Not Miss

1. Sarakiniko Beach, Milos most Beautiful gem

Let’s start with perhaps Milos’s most unique location, Sarakiniko. With its snow-white rock formations creating a lunar-like environment, it has become a major tourist attraction. This may also be the most photographed spot in Milos; if you search for Milos on Instagram, you’ll undoubtedly come across countless magical images of Sarakiniko. My tip here is to bring a picnic basket and spend an entire afternoon among the rocks. It’s an excellent place for swimming, as the cliffs create a barrier that makes the water flowing in between them calm and tranquil.

For those who are more adventurous, it is also a well-known cliff diving spot, where you can jump straight into the sea from a high elevation.

2. Our favourite village of Milos Greece - Plaka

We stayed just a stone’s throw from Plaka, and as soon as we had the chance, we walked over the mountain to the charming village. If you want to experience authentic Greek streets with narrow alleyways, white and blue houses, and picturesque squares that provide an unforgettable sense of genuine Greece, this is the place to go when you’re in Milos.

3. Jump on a boat for a daytour at Kleftiko

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the opportunity to visit Kleftiko, but if we had one more day on Milos. This would certainly have been an activity that we would have done. It’s a unique place consisting of dramatic rock formations in crystal-clear waters, and the best way to explore is therefore by booking a full-day or half-day boat tour. I can recommend this blog for more information about Kleftiko.

4. Mandrakia, the most picturesque fishing village in Milos

A picturesque little fishing village that you absolutely should not miss is Mandrakia. It’s a very small fishing village where the fishermen are still active, and that’s what makes Mandrakia special. Here, you’ll find one of the better restaurants on Milos, Medusa, which serves fresh seafood and fish. It’s such a cozy and charming little village!

5. Pollonia - a charming little coastal town

Pollonia is a slightly larger village located a bit away from the “bustle” of Milos, making it a very calm and pleasant place that’s great for those looking to relax for a while. There is a beautiful beach and several restaurants where you can unwind on the beach and enjoy your day while visiting Pollonia.

6. Klima - One of Milos's Most Popular Villages

At the end of a winding road deep in the valley between the mountains, you’ll find the incredibly charming fishing village of Klima.

After visiting the café/restaurant in Klima, it’s a must to stroll along the beach and admire all the spectacular fishing huts. It’s easy to see why Klima has become such a popular destination, and it’s no wonder that when images of Milos pop up, they often feature Klima, as it truly is a photogenic and magical little gem.

One of my favorite spots on all of Milos that I highly recommend!

7. Enjoy the sunset at Castle of Plaka

Watching the sunset is a must when visiting islands like Milos. So, where’s the best spot to see the sunset on Milos?

The Castle of Plaka, without a doubt. Climb the stairs up through Plaka and follow the path all the way to a castle at the top of the hill. Find a spot, sit back, and just enjoy. It’s absolutely the best place on Milos to watch the sunset!

One tip is to arrive early, as it’s a very popular spot.

It’s also the perfect photo location. Go in the morning to have the place to yourself and capture incredible photos!

8. Tsigrado Beach, the hidden gem of Milos

A beautiful and secluded beach that has become very popular in recent years. It’s somewhat challenging to reach, but the beautiful beach and crystal-clear water make it certainly worth the effort! To reach the beach, you have to climb down a cliff using ladders and ropes. Given that maybe not the easiest beach to get to, but I still certainly recommend visiting Tsigrado Beach.

9. Enjoy the afternoon at Fyriplaka Beach

Just a fifteen-minute walk away from Tsigrado Beach is Fyriplaka Beach. Fyriplaka is however much more accessible and also a larger beach than Tsigrado. Making it a perfect beach to just hang out and take it very easy. Of course, this beach is also incredibly beautiful and the close by restaurant is a plus.

10. Enjoy the view of Firopotamos

Firopotamos is a small, charming fishing village on Milos that is absolutely worth a visit. Here, you can stroll along the little beach and admire the colorful fishing cottages right by the water. The village has a genuine and peaceful atmosphere that offers a glimpse into traditional island life. Stop to take in the beautiful view, photograph the picturesque houses, and enjoy the clear blue water. It’s the perfect place for a moment of calm before you continue your exploration around Milos.

The Best Restaurants in Milos You Must Not Miss

1. Okto - a restaurant in Plaka with a stunning view

Okto has one of the most fantastic views in Milos. Head to Okto for a nice drink and to enjoy the surroundings, or try something from their menu.

2. Medusa in Mandrakia - Fresh fish and seafood

Medusa in Milos truly offers a dining experience like no other. Located in the charming fishing village of Mandrakia, the restaurant provides an unforgettable combination of authentic flavors, local culture, and a stunning setting. With its simple yet picturesque location right by the water, it feels as if you’ve stepped straight into a postcard of traditional Greece. Here, not only can you taste freshly prepared dishes, but you can also see exactly where they come from. Looking down over the edge of the outdoor seating area, you’ll see the fishing huts, where the day’s catch – octopus hanging on lines – dries in the sun before reaching your plate.

I ordered their specialty, grilled octopus, and was not disappointed. The dish was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection, striking that perfect balance of saltiness and acidity that captures the essence of Greek cuisine. Their grilled shrimp was also fantastic – juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. It’s clear that Medusa takes great pride in their dishes, serving only the finest from the sea.

Dining here is more than just a meal – it’s an experience of Greek culinary culture and a genuine insight into the local fishing life on Milos.

3. Astakas Café in Klima - located right by the beach

In Klima, there’s an elegant restaurant right on the shoreline called Astakas Café Restaurant that you simply must visit. It’s a fantastic place to enjoy an afternoon coffee or even a larger meal in the evening while watching the sunset. Try their orange cake – a must when visiting Milos!

4. Barillo - A high-end restaurant with locally sourced ingredients, simply magical!

Barillo is a cozy restaurant and bar in the heart of Milos that offers a relaxed yet trendy atmosphere. Here, you can enjoy delicious cocktails and a wide range of local small dishes, often with a modern twist. With its lovely decor and views over the harbor, Barillo is the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. Whether you’re coming for dinner or just want to enjoy a drink at sunset, Barillo offers a memorable experience and a laid-back vibe that attracts both locals and visitors.
