Things to know before going to the Philippines

The Philippines is undoubtedly one of the most stunning places you can visit, with its breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture. However, traveling here comes with its unique quirks and differences. To help you make the most of your trip, I’ve put together a list of essential tips and things to know before you go.

Is Philippines a safe country for tourists?

The Philippines is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, with millions visiting each year to explore its stunning islands, vibrant cities, and warm hospitality. While the country is welcoming, like any destination, it’s essential to stay informed and take common-sense precautions. Stick to popular tourist areas, avoid displaying valuables, and stay updated on local travel advisories. By being mindful and prepared, you can enjoy the beauty of the Philippines with peace of mind.

How to get around on your trip going to the Philippines?

Public transportation within the islands is limited, with TukTuks being the primary mode of local travel. The easiest and most convenient way to get around is by booking transportation through your hotel or hostel—this is what we did, and it worked perfectly. Renting a moped is also a budget-friendly option, allowing you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

For booking excursions, your accommodation can help arrange these, or you can find vendors on the beach. Just be sure to compare prices to avoid being overcharged.

In Manila, the best way to get from the airport to your accommodation is by using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Uber. These services provide a fixed price before you enter the car, offering extra peace of mind. Keep in mind, Manila’s traffic can be extremely congested, so a journey that would normally take 30 minutes could take hours.

For island-traveling, flying is usually the most practical option, unless the islands are close enough for a ferry ride.

Is the Philippines cheap for tourists?

Traveling in the Philippines is incredibly affordable, with most expenses being much lower than in many other destinations. You can easily negotiate prices for almost everything, which adds to the budget-friendly experience.

  • Accommodation: Hostel or hotel stays typically cost around 150 SEK per night. For booking, Hostelworld is a great app to help you find good deals.
  • Meals: Dining at local restaurants will usually cost between 50-100 SEK, offering tasty dishes at a reasonable price.
  • Transportation: A TukTuk ride within a village or town is only about 15-20 SEK, making getting around quite inexpensive.

In short, the Philippines is a fantastic destination for budget travelers, where you can enjoy beautiful experiences without breaking the bank!

Do they understand and speak English?

The people of the Philippines are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help. English is widely spoken, so communication is rarely a problem. The relaxed atmosphere of the country allows you to immerse yourself in the culture quickly, and this is one of the reasons why so many travelers fall in love with the Philippines.

Within just a few hours, you’ll feel your stress melt away as you embrace the laid-back vibe. Filipinos are not only kind but also deeply caring and generous, even though they may not have much.

I had a heartwarming experience one evening when the person we rented a hut from knocked on our door to invite us to dinner. We joined his family and friends for a meal, and it felt so natural—like a shared celebration. It was a simple yet cozy gesture that truly embodied the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people.

What's the food like in the Philippines?

As with many destinations abroad, the bacterial culture in the Philippines can differ from what we’re used to in Sweden, and your stomach might react accordingly. To help balance your digestive system, I recommend taking probiotic tablets, which can be found at local pharmacies. These have worked well for me during travels and can help keep your stomach flora in check.

Although I did experience mild food poisoning once—it wasn’t a major issue—it passed within a day. While it’s tough to avoid stomach discomfort entirely, most travelers will feel a bit off at times, but it’s nothing catastrophic. Just stay hydrated, eat carefully, and listen to your body.
