Traveling to New Zealand is a dream for many adventure-seeking travelers. With its stunning nature, diverse landscapes, and exciting culture, it is a country that offers endless opportunities for discovery. But what is the best way to get around in this remote paradise? Whether you plan to explore the dramatic fjords of the South Island or the lush forests of the North Island, there are several ways to travel around that can suit different travel preferences and budgets. In this guide, we go through the most popular transportation options in New Zealand and help you find the best way to experience everything the country has to offer.
Travel New Zealand by bus
I chose to travel through New Zealand with Kiwi Experience, a popular ‘hop-on hop-off’ bus pass, and I couldn’t have been happier. My pass, called ‘Sheepdog,’ took me through most of both the North and South Islands. Besides Kiwi Experience, there is also Stray, which offers a similar experience.
A ‘hop-on hop-off’ bus pass means that you decide how long you want to stay at each place. You choose how many days you want to spend at each stop and pay in advance for the bus pass, which covers certain destinations. The only thing you need to do is be in the right place at the right time when you want to move on to the next destination. Each morning, a list is passed around where you can sign up for the activities you want to participate in at the place you’re heading to and specify your preferred type of accommodation. The bus company handles the bookings for you, so you don’t have to think about logistics and reservations during your trip.
The best thing about the bus pass is the social aspect—you travel with other travelers who share your passion for adventure and discovery. Plus, the bus stops at different places along the way to the next destination, giving you the opportunity to explore new sights and take part in spontaneous activities. There’s never a dull moment!

Travel New Zealand in a campervan
Another popular way to get around New Zealand is to rent a campervan or motorhome. This option gives you maximum freedom and flexibility, as you can plan your trip entirely according to your own preferences. You can stop wherever you want, whenever you want, and really take the time to explore the remote and scenic places the country has to offer.
However, traveling by campervan requires some preparation. Unlike traveling with a bus company, where much of the planning is done for you, you are responsible for doing all the research and booking both campsites and activities. Fortunately, there are many useful apps and resources that can make your journey easier. One of the most popular apps is CamperMate, which helps you find campsites, dump stations, and attractions along your route.
When it comes to renting a campervan, Jucy is one of the most well-known companies in New Zealand. They offer a wide range of vehicles, from smaller, more basic campervans to larger motorhomes suitable for families or bigger groups.
If it’s your first time traveling in a campervan, there are a few things to keep in mind. It can be a bit more challenging than you might initially think, especially when it comes to navigating narrow roads or parking in tight spaces. You also need to plan for things like water refills, power supply, and waste management. But despite these challenges, the reward is great. Waking up to a stunning view of a remote beach or a tranquil lake, and being able to cook and live right in the middle of nature, are experiences that make the whole adventure magical.
With the right preparation and planning, a journey in a campervan can become an unforgettable adventure in New Zealand. You get the freedom to explore the country on your own terms and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Travel New Zealand by car and stay at hostels / hotels
If you don’t want to travel by bus or stay in a campervan, renting a regular car and staying in hotels, hostels, or Airbnbs is an excellent option. This way of traveling combines comfort and flexibility, allowing you to explore New Zealand at your own pace without compromising on convenience.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the country on your own terms. You can easily adjust your itinerary based on how you feel each day and the weather, discovering hidden gems that aren’t always accessible by public transportation. New Zealand’s roads are well-maintained, and the landscape is incredibly diverse, making the road trip a part of the adventure.

When it comes to accommodation, there is a wide range of options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels and charming Airbnb rentals. Hostelworld is an excellent tool for quickly and easily booking hostels, especially if you are traveling on a budget or want to meet other travelers. If you prefer more privacy or are looking for unique accommodations, you might consider booking through Airbnb. In New Zealand, there are many places to stay that are ‘in the middle of nowhere,’ offering a unique experience, such as staying in a converted barn, a cabin by a remote lake, or a treehouse with mountain views. These accommodations may be more expensive, but they provide a memorable and authentic experience of New Zealand’s stunning landscapes.
To find the best hotel and accommodation options during your trip to New Zealand, I recommend checking out Hotels.com. Here, you can easily compare prices, read reviews, and find accommodations that suit your needs, whether you’re looking for luxury hotels, charming boutique hotels, or affordable options. With their extensive selection and user-friendly platform, booking your stay is a breeze, ensuring you have a comfortable and memorable experience.
